Hair Growth Routine for Curly & 4C Hair: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide for Healthy Natural Hair After 40

Let’s be honest, sis — when you have curly, coily, or 4C hair, growth is not just about waiting for your hair to get longer.

It’s about creating a routine that helps your hair stay moisturized, protected, and strong enough to hold on to the length you’re already growing.

Because here’s the truth: your hair is growing. But if it feels like it’s “not growing,” the real issue may be breakage, dryness, tangles, or not having a consistent routine.

And after 40, our hair can start acting a little different. It may feel drier, thinner, more fragile, or harder to keep moisturized. That doesn’t mean your hair journey is over. It just means your routine needs a little more care, patience, and intention.

Today, I’m sharing a simple hair growth routine for curly and 4C hair that you can follow step by step.

Why Curly & 4C Hair Needs a Hair Growth Routine

Curly and 4C hair is beautiful, but it also needs extra moisture and gentle handling.

Because of the curl pattern, natural oils from the scalp have a harder time traveling down the hair strand. That means the ends of your hair can become dry faster. And when the ends are dry, they are more likely to break.

That’s why a good hair growth routine should focus on three things:

Moisture. Strength. Protection.

You don’t need a complicated 15-step routine. You need a routine you can actually stay consistent with.

Let’s break it down.

Step 1: Moisturize & Pre-Poo Before Wash Day

Before you even shampoo, your hair needs preparation.

A pre-poo is what you apply before shampooing to help soften the hair, reduce tangles, and protect your strands from becoming too dry during wash day.

This is especially helpful if your hair gets tangled easily, feels dry before wash day, or sheds more when you detangle.

What to do:

Start by sectioning your hair into 4 to 8 parts. This makes your hair easier to manage and keeps you from pulling through large sections.

Apply a moisturizing conditioner or treatment to soften the hair. Then gently finger-detangle each section before using a wide-tooth comb.

For this step, I recommend the SEA Any TANGLES Pre & Post Poo 3-Way Flourishing Conditioner because it can be used before shampooing, after shampooing, or as a co-wash. It helps with detangling and moisture, which makes wash day feel less stressful.

Shirlie’s tip: Don’t rush this step. Pre-pooing is where you prevent a lot of unnecessary breakage.

Step 2: Wash With Care

A healthy hair growth routine starts with a clean scalp.

Your scalp is where growth begins, so it needs to be cleansed regularly. But that does not mean you need to scrub your hair harshly or use products that leave your strands feeling stripped.

The goal is to cleanse the scalp while being gentle with the ends of your hair.

What to do:

Apply shampoo directly to your scalp and use the pads of your fingers to massage gently. Focus on your scalp, not the ends.

As you rinse, the shampoo will travel down the rest of your hair and cleanse it without you having to rough it up.

Use lukewarm water instead of hot water. Hot water can make already-dry hair feel even drier.

For this step, I recommend SEA How CLEAN Shimmer & Shine Flourishing Shampoo. It gently cleanses while supporting softness and shine, and it is a great choice when your hair needs to feel clean without feeling stripped.

Shirlie’s tip: If your hair feels squeaky clean, it may be too stripped. We want clean — not crispy.

Step 3: Deep Condition Like Your Hair Depends on It

Deep conditioning is not optional if your goal is healthier, stronger natural hair.

This is the step that gives your hair that soft, nourished feeling after wash day. It helps improve manageability, makes detangling easier, and supports stronger strands over time.

If you are over 40 and your hair has started feeling drier or more delicate, deep conditioning needs to become your best friend.

What to do:

After shampooing, apply a rich deep conditioner or mask from roots to ends. Pay special attention to the ends because they are the oldest and most fragile part of your hair.

Cover your hair with a plastic cap and let the treatment sit for 30 to 60 minutes.

For this step, I recommend SEA The REPAIR Deep & Continuous Flourishing Mask. It is designed for hair that needs deeper care, moisture, and repair support — especially if your hair feels dry, damaged, or weak.

Shirlie’s tip: Deep conditioning is one of those steps where consistency matters. Doing it once is nice. Doing it regularly is where you start seeing the difference.

Step 4: Lock In Moisture

Moisture is wonderful, but if you don’t seal it in, it can disappear fast.

After rinsing out your deep conditioner, your hair needs a leave-in product and something to help lock that moisture into the strand.

This is where many women miss a step. They moisturize the hair, but they don’t seal it — then wonder why their hair feels dry the next day.

What to do:

Apply your leave-in conditioner while your hair is still damp. Then seal with an oil, butter, or cream depending on what your hair likes.

Once your hair is moisturized, style it in a way that protects your ends. Twists, braids, bantu knots, or low-manipulation styles are great options.

If you want to keep things simple, you can use the SEA Any TANGLES Conditioner again as part of your moisture routine because it works in multiple ways.

Shirlie’s tip: Your ends are the oldest part of your hair. Treat them like fine lace, not a kitchen sponge.

Step 5: Protect & Maintain Your Hair Between Wash Days

This is where growth retention really happens.

You can have the best wash day routine in the world, but if you are rough with your hair during the week, sleeping on cotton pillowcases, or constantly restyling, your hair may still break.

Protection is what helps you keep your length.

What to do:

Sleep with a satin bonnet or satin scarf every night. You can also use a satin pillowcase for extra protection.

Choose low-manipulation styles that don’t require you to comb, brush, or restyle your hair every day.

Moisturize your hair as needed. Some women need daily moisture. Others only need it every few days. Pay attention to how your hair feels.

Shirlie’s tip: Hair growth is not just what you do on wash day. It’s what you do between wash days too.

A Simple Weekly Hair Growth Routine

Here is an easy routine you can follow:

Before wash day:
Pre-poo and detangle with SEA Any TANGLES Conditioner.

Final Thoughts: Consistency + Care = Growth

Healthy hair growth is not about chasing every new trend or buying every product you see online.

It’s about learning your hair, treating it gently, and staying consistent with a routine that supports moisture, strength, and protection.

Your hair does not need perfection. It needs patience.

So section it gently. Wash with care. Deep condition regularly. Lock in moisture. Protect it at night.

And most of all, love your hair through every stage of the journey.

Because your crown is still growing, sis — and so are you.
