Getting older doesn’t mean you have to give up on glowing, healthy-looking skin. In fact, your 40s and beyond can be a wonderful time to become more intentional about how you care for yourself.

You don’t need a complicated 10-step routine or a bathroom full of products. Sometimes, it’s the small habits you consistently practice that make the biggest difference.

Here are five simple beauty habits worth adding to your routine.

1. Never Skip Your Sunscreen.

If there’s one beauty habit I would encourage every woman over 40 to make non-negotiable, it’s wearing sunscreen.

Sun exposure contributes to visible signs of skin aging, including uneven skin tone, dark spots and fine lines. And yes, this applies even if you have melanin-rich skin.

Make sunscreen the last step of your morning skincare routine and choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

Think of it this way: your other skincare products are doing their job, but sunscreen helps protect the work you’re already putting in.

2. Keep Your Skin Moisturized

As we get older, our skin can become drier and may not hold onto moisture as easily as it once did.

That’s why moisturizing isn’t just about making your skin feel soft. It helps support your skin barrier and keeps your skin looking smoother and more comfortable.

Look for a moisturizer that works with your skin type and apply it consistently—especially after cleansing.

Simple tip: If your skin feels tight after washing your face, your routine may need a little more hydration.

3. Be Gentle With Your Skin

More isn’t always better when it comes to skincare.

Scrubbing your face aggressively, using too many exfoliating products, or constantly switching products can leave your skin feeling irritated.

After 40, try treating your skin a little more gently.

Use a mild cleanser, avoid harsh scrubbing, and introduce new products gradually. Your skin doesn’t need to be punished to be beautiful.

Gentle and consistent beats aggressive and complicated.

4. Give Your Neck and Hands Some Love

Raise your hand if you have a great skincare routine for your face but completely forget about your neck and hands. 🙋🏾‍♀️

You’re not alone!

Your neck and hands deserve attention too. When you’re applying your moisturizer and sunscreen, simply extend those products down to your neck and onto the backs of your hands.

It takes an extra few seconds, but it’s an easy habit that can become part of your everyday routine.

5. Stop Waiting for a Special Occasion to Take Care of Yourself

This one might be my favorite.

You don’t have to wait for a birthday, vacation, date night, or special event to take care of yourself.

Put on the lipstick.

the good skincare.

Wear the fragrance.

Take the extra five minutes to do something that makes you feel good.

Beauty after 40 isn’t about trying to look like you’re 25 again. It’s about taking care of the woman you are today and feeling confident in your own skin.

Start Small

If you’re looking at these five habits and thinking, “Okay, but I can’t add five more things to my routine,” don’t.

Pick one habit and start there.

Maybe it’s applying sunscreen every morning. Maybe it’s remembering your neck and hands. Maybe it’s simply being more consistent with moisturizing.

Small habits become routines, and routines can make a big difference over time.

And remember: you don’t have to earn the right to take care of yourself. You deserve it at every age.

Here’s to glowing skin, healthy habits, and embracing every beautiful chapter. ❤️

Which of these five habits are you already doing—and which one are you going to start?
