🍂 My Exact Fall Skincare Routine: 5 Steps for Dry, Dull Skin After 40

Fall is coming—and your skin may be the first thing to notice.

Have you noticed your skin feeling a little drier, tighter, rougher, or less radiant lately?

You’re not imagining it.

As the seasons change, cooler air and changes in humidity can affect how your skin feels. The lightweight routine that worked beautifully during the summer may suddenly leave your skin asking for more moisture.

And if you’re over 40, you may already be noticing that your skin doesn’t always bounce back the way it used to.

That doesn’t mean you need a complicated 10-step routine.

You may simply need to make a few strategic changes.

Here are my five fall skincare steps for helping dry, dull skin look and feel its best.

1. Start with a gentle cleanser

Fall is not the time to leave your skin feeling squeaky-clean and stripped.

Look for a cleanser that removes makeup, oil, and impurities without leaving your skin feeling tight afterward.

After cleansing, your skin should feel clean—but comfortable.

Ask yourself:
Does your skin feel tight immediately after washing?

If the answer is yes, your cleanser may be doing more than you need it to.

2. Don’t skip hydration

There’s a difference between hydration and moisture, and your skin can benefit from both.

Hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid can help attract water to the skin, while moisturizers help support the skin’s protective barrier and reduce moisture loss.

This is especially important when the weather becomes cooler and drier.

Think of your fall routine as:

Cleanse → Hydrate → Moisturize

3. Give your skin some gentle exfoliation

Dull skin can sometimes be related to a buildup of dead skin cells on the surface.

Gentle exfoliation can help improve the appearance of rough, uneven-looking skin and allow your skincare products to apply more smoothly.

But here’s the important part:

More exfoliation doesn’t mean better results.

Over-exfoliating can leave your skin irritated and uncomfortable.

Your skin doesn’t need to be punished into glowing.

It needs to be supported consistently.

4. Add targeted ingredients based on what your skin actually needs

This is where I don’t recommend simply copying someone else’s skincare routine.

Your friend may love a particular serum.

Your favorite influencer may swear by retinol.

Your sister may have completely different skincare concerns.

That doesn’t mean those products are right for YOU.

If you’re dealing with dryness, dullness, uneven tone, fine lines, or other concerns, your routine should be built around your skin’s needs.

Instead of randomly adding products to your cart, you can start by learning more about what your skin may need.

5. Moisturize—and don’t forget sunscreen

A good moisturizer can help support your skin barrier and keep your skin feeling comfortable as temperatures change.

And even when summer is over:

Sunscreen doesn’t go away.

Daily sun protection remains an important part of a skincare routine because UV exposure contributes to premature skin aging and hyperpigmentation.

Your fall routine should still include broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day.

Your Fall Skin Reset Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

You don’t need a shelf full of products.

You need a routine that makes sense for your skin.

That’s why I encourage women to stop asking:

“What’s everybody else using?”

And start asking:

“What does MY skin need?”

If you’re not sure where to start, my Skincare Analyzer can help you identify your skin concerns and give you a more personalized direction.
